Vestas 420 Nationals from tomorrow

CHENNAI: The Royal Madras Yacht Club RMYC (Chennai) will conduct the Vestas 420 sailing Nationals at the
Twenty-four sail boats/ teams and 48 sailors are taking part in the championship. Sailors from RMYC, Army Yachting Node (Mumbai), Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC, Mumbai), Royal Bombay Yacht Club, College of Military Engineering (Pune), Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (Secunderabad), Artillery Centre (Hyderabad) and National School of Sailing (NSS, Bhopal) are participating.
Defending champion Sandeep Jain and reigning women’s champion pair Rohini Rau (helm — main sailor) and Pallavi Shanbagh (crew — co-sailor) will provide the star attraction.
There will be 10 races in total — three races every day from June 17 to 19 and one race on June 20.

Speaking to newspersons here on Monday, Deep Rekhi, Captain of Boats (RMYC) said 420 class is a stepping stone in to the 470 class which is a men’s and women’s class in Olympic Games.
The open class champion pair will walk away with The Gen. Dutta Rolling Trophy and the best junior sailor will bag the Spring Chicken Rolling Trophy.
Moreover, Vestas Rolling Trophies will be awarded in the men’s, women’s, boys and girls’ categories.
Navaz Currim Bhoi, Commodore, RMYC said, “This is the second time in two years we are conducting the event. This is the start of the year-long celebration to celebrate the RMYC’s centenary year in 2010.”
